Charity: All in a Week With Moya
For over a decade, our Community Commitment programme has provided a cash injection for local charities, community groups and deserving causes.
More recently, we decided to take it a step further and recruited Moya to bring it to life by providing hands-on support too. Employed by The Park Lane Group, she gives her time to several local charities.
We caught up with Moya to chat through a typical week in her role:
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: Helping Homeless People
“I work at the Matthew 25 Mission every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. With breakfasts and around 80 lunches served daily for homeless or vulnerable people, it can be hectic. At the same time though it’s rewarding to be part of a team that’s helping people facing hard times.
“My role sees me help with the food preparation and washing up. Egg and bacon rolls or sandwiches provide a sustaining breakfast and a hot meal at lunchtime is really important, especially as the weather is getting colder.
Tuesday & Thursday: One-to-One Help
“With the lunches over, on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon I visit a lady who is housebound. She gets confused and forgets who I am, although she is starting to remember me following continued visits. She gets very frustrated at times, but it doesn’t bother me. I can understand how she feels and knowing that I’m helping her just by sitting and listening means a lot.
Wednesday & Friday: Into the IPU at our Local Hospice
“On a Wednesday afternoon and all day on Fridays I work in the In-Patient Unit at St. Wilfred’s Hospice. It is sad when we lose someone but it’s uplifting chatting with the patients as we serve breakfast and lunch and teas and coffees.
“I can’t really put into words the fulfilment I get from my work. Every week is busy and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to do what I do, and see the difference it makes to others.”
The Park Lane Group Community Commitment programme is far-reaching. Through it, we’ve had the privilege to meet and help some inspirational people and organisations. You can find out more about our work and their stories online at parklanegroup.net/news/community-news
